Post Burn Contractures

Post Burn Contractures

Post burn contracture refers to the tightening of the skin after a second or third degree burn. After skin burn the surrounding skin begins to pull together, resulting in a contracture. This kind of patient needs to be treated as soon as possible as the scar can result in restriction of movement around the injured area.

Preventing contractures after a burn:

Post burn contractures occur when the burn scar matures, thickens, and tightens, preventing burn part movement. This usually occurs when a burn occurs over a joint of patient. A contracture is a serious complication of a after burn. If patient gets a contracture, patient will not be able to move the scarred area normally. For example, patient may have trouble doing normal things like dressing, walking, eating, or playing. It is important that you let patient do things for him or herself regardless of how long or hard it might be. This will help prevent contractures and help patient become independent and confident.

Treatment Available for Abnormal Post Burn Contractures:

Post burn contractures do not go away on their own, although may improve with the passage of time, with physiotherapy, and with splinting. If persistent the person may need the contracture to be surgically released. Treatments may include local skin flaps (z-plasty) or skin grafting (full thickness or split thickness). There are also pharmacy and drug-store treatments that can be used to help scar maturation, especially silicone gel treatments.

Prevention of contracture formation is key for first aid. For instance, in the case of a burned hand one would splint the hand and wrap each finger individually is solution. In the instance of burns on the neck, hyperextension of the neck (i.e. no use of pillows) should be maintained for healing process. Carbon dioxide laser therapy is now also used to aid in the loosening of surrounding skin, although is yet to form as part of an official global rehabilitation program.
