Female Pattern Baldness: Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is a distinctive form of hair loss that occurs in women with androgenetic alopecia. Many women are affected by FPHL. In fact, around 40% of women by age 50 show signs of hair loss and less than 45% of women actually reach the age of 80 with a full head of hair.

Can a woman have male pattern baldness?
The reason for female pattern baldness is not well understood, but it may be related to: Aging. Changes in the levels of androgens (male hormones). For example, after reaching menopause, many women find that the hair on their head is thinner, while the hair on their face is coarser.

Do women go bald?
The hair follicles are particularly sensitive to a male hormone called DHT, which is related to testosterone. In fact, up to 50% of baldness is caused by this. Oddly enough, the genes related to baldness are inherited from the mothers side – ironic as women hardly ever go bald!

Is it normal for a lot of hair to fall out?
Everyone loses hair. In fact, it’s normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day. According to the American Academy of Dermatology. But what if it seems like there’s significantly more loss than that?

“Once you exceed that, you’re losing it at an abnormal rate,” says Dr. David J. Wong, clinical associate professor of dermatology at Stanford University. Contrary to popular notion, hair loss is not just a condition that men face: up to 40 percent of women in America also experience it. <source>
